Children's Class

Ronin’s children’s classes start around eight years old, depending on maturity and motor skills, and introduces the practical applications of martial arts. We discuss concepts such as bullying and other potential dangers to children, and how to manage them, particularly in school environments. Underlying is the principle of “Karate ni sente nashi” (空手に先手なし) or "There is no first strike in karate", meaning that the martial arts are used for defense only, and with only the necessary amount of force to protect oneself.

Students begin with basic defense, such as breakfalls and blocks, along with basic strikes and stances. As they progress, they begin to learn judo throws and holds. With safety as a priority, Ronin only teaches the sport version of the various throws, and only after they can confidently protect themselves in a fall. The softer principles of aikido are applied to children’s classes, both in approach and in application, to ensure that students have the correct mindset when entering conflict, and not aggression. Students will also learn to respond to attacks with the tools they’ve learned. Sparring is a part of class, with protective gear.

Brown Belts

Advanced students are expected to teach and lead classes as well. This is done to learn maturity, responsibility, and leadership.

Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.
